What does an instructional designer do? Typically, this is a collaborative role working with subject matter experts to translate their knowledge into effective instructional presentations. These subject matter experts can be faculty members at a university, researchers, technical specialists, other educators or anyone who has knowledge to convey to a group of learners. I provide both the project management and technical production support needed to deliver effective courses within tight timelines.
What does an eLearning Specialist do? I help my clients evaluate and implement web-based tools or business processes that improve teaching and learning for their enterprise. Together, we look at the best practices and design solutions that will promote efficient and effective interactions between the educators and their students.
What kind of work do you do? Instructional designers and eLearning specialists are usually educators with an affinity for technology who act as liaisons between educators or subject matter experts and the software platform that they rely upon to reach their students. I have worked on teams that customized and administered open source software for managing distance learning courses, created web-based learning interactions and animations for educational research, and delivered software training for non-technical professionals in community, K-12 and university settings.
Are you available for hire? In September 2009, I started working exclusively as an independent contractor. Feel free to take a look at my résumé and contact me for details.
