Poster Session - Mapped Education Research to LMS Evaluation

NERCOMP (Northeast Regional Computing Program) - 2009 Annual Conference - Poster Session
Evaluating Moodle for Promoting Student Engagement

Researched and presented poster session on how to evaluate any learning management system (LMS) for it's ability to promote student engagement. Used criteria established through key research on college teaching practices that can effectively and efficiently improve student outcomes in higher education. Mapped these best practices to the affordances of online technologies in general and to specfic, key functions found in the Brandeis University implementation of Moodle, an open source LMS. The Resource Site for the Poster Presentation provides numerous links to the research studies and evaluation tools.

Designed University's Online Course Template

Brandeis University Library & Technology Services - LATTE Project
Online Learning Management System

Led decisions on the selection and layout of key components for the university's site-wide course template during a rapid transition from WebCT Vista 3 to the open source learning management system, Moodle. Authored the styles needed to transform a standard Moodle theme into a customized brand-aligned look and feel. Kept the theme updated with successive upgrades to the Moodle software. Additional information about this project is available from the university's project website.

Collaborated to Create Unique Self-Assessment Activity

Boston University's Metropolitan College - February 2006
Online Graduate Course in Project Management Communications and Leadership

This interactive learning object started out as a one-page handout for an on-campus course. I recognized the need to transform the instructor's conceptual explanation into an interactive learning object for her students. I prepared detailed specifications for the Flash learning objects designer, tested the result, and embedded it in the course. Compare the activity below to the original in-class handout from the instructor, Star Dargin.

Restructured Exam Instructions for Online Students

Boston University's Metropolitan College - December 2005
Online Graduate Course in Computer Information Systems

Proctored, web-based final exams are a vital component in the Online Master of Science program in Computer Information Systems at Metropolitan College. Reducing exam-related stress is key to student achievement and satisfaction. In the process of revising the course materials, I opted to rewrite the template our staff was using for proctored exam instructions using a friendly, FAQ-style, question-and-answer format.

Note: This document was originally integrated into the course as a web-page; it has been extracted from the learning management system as a printed document.

Course Exemplar - Digital Video Basics for Teachers

Web-Based Instructional Design Course, Boston University - December 2004
Introductory Module for a Three-Part Course on Digital Video Basics for K-12 Teachers

This module was created as an assignment in web-based instructional design for a graduate course at Boston University School of Education. The goal of the assignment was to offer multiple pathways for students with varying knowledge levels. (It was selected by the instructor as an exemplar and is currently listed among the sample projects for incoming students in the course.)

Note: Per the instructor's preference, the module was not intended to have database implementation nor compatibility with a wide range of browsers and platforms. Unlike other sites in this portfolio, it is only functional in Internet Explorer for Windows.
